The third quarter of 2021 saw interesting trends for the top 5 News and Magazines apps in South Africa, based on data from Sensor Tower. Here’s a breakdown of their performance in terms of weekly downloads, revenue, and active users.

Opera News: breaking & local showed fluctuating weekly downloads, starting at about 15.6K at the end of June and peaking at 22.6K by the end of September. Active users slightly decreased from 353.5K to 314.1K in July but saw a rebound to approximately 381.9K in late September.

Opera News Lite - Less Data experienced a decline in both weekly downloads and active users. Downloads dropped from 18.9K in late June to 3.3K by the end of September. Active users also saw a decrease from 103.4K to around 83.4K over the quarter.

South Africa Breaking News had a significant drop in downloads, starting strong with 20.5K in late June but falling to 3.4K by the end of September. Active users also followed a similar declining trend, decreasing from 30.6K to 17.6K throughout the quarter.

National Lottery Results maintained relatively steady download numbers, ranging between 6.9K and 11.3K. Active users saw a slight increase from 96K in late June to approximately 100.3K by the end of September.

Twitter Lite had the highest number of downloads among the top 5, with weekly downloads remaining above 32K throughout the quarter and peaking at 48.3K in mid-July. Active users were consistently high, hovering around 2.7M, with a slight dip to 2.6M in September. Revenue saw a spike to $93 in late August before dropping to zero in September.
